“Bee” a Part of the Solution
(to the pollinator problem)
Saturday, September 21
10:00 AM, Fellowship Hall
A Presentation by John Davis, Conservation Outreach Coordinator
Austin Parks and Recreation Department Land Management Program
Pollinators of all kinds are facing conservation challenges. Given that native bee species are the absolute best pollinators (as well as sporting beautiful hues like blue, shiny green, yellow, etc.), threats to their survival are especially worrying. However, by learning some simple things you can do on your property (and things NOT to do), you can become part of the growing effort to help conserve native bees. This session will teach attendees about the amazing diversity (~800 species in Texas) and interesting behaviors of native bees in the Austin area and how to help these interesting insects. You will learn that unlike the exotic European Honeybee, native bees are very reluctant to sting… and many can’t. You will also learn things that well-intentioned people do that harm native bee populations. Depending on the weather the session may end with a short walk in a nearby meadow to observe bees in the field.
