Second Death

Dear friends,

It is interesting how the Word of God comes to life as we face different situations. In recent days, we have clung to Jesus’ words about heaven in Luke 20. He  says, “And they will never die again.” As we have grieved the loss of a much-loved sister who was a vital part of our extended family, we are thankful for the living hope that we have in Christ Jesus. A second cousin, no doubt twice or three times removed, described her best, “she was just wonderful to be around.” What a hope, what a challenge for us as well to be just wonderful to be around.

At the same time that we were saying farewell to our sister, our family welcomed a new member of the family, Luca Schaeffer, born to David and Jillian at the Bongolo hospital in Gabon. We head there today to visit our little guy and to find refreshing in new life and new beginnings.

The brevity of life has challenged us anew to be all in for God’s Kingdom. Whether at the prison, hospital, visiting neighbors, or teaching in the classroom, we want to be light and hope and lean in for opportunities to talk about Jesus.

Thank you for your support and prayers and for sharing our joys and sorrows.

Prayer Requests and Praise

  1. Pray for a widows seminar this month, focusing on encouragement and blessing for children.
  2. Pray for us as we face the challenges of the classroom. Pray that we would prepare well pastors and their wives.
  3. We are so thankful that Ezekiel, a child at the blind school, was able to have cataract surgery. He saw his parents for the first time. He immediately said, “Get me a notebook and a pen so I can learn to write”! Pray as we work to get other children tested.
  4. Pray for our trip to Gabon and that we would be a blessing to our children, grandchildren, and the hospital work.
