Last month, we talked about The 5 Cs of Hiring. To summarize, the 5 C’s that I shared are calling, capacity, character, competency, and chemistry. You can review that newsletter article HERE. However, after sending that newsletter out, one of the Executive Pastors in our XPMinistry Network, Jack Sweany from University Christian Church in Manhattan, Kansas, sent me an email suggesting that I should add a sixth C to the list… “coachable.” And, he is exactly right!
Being coachable is vital to any team that wants to thrive. There is nothing worse than working with someone who thinks they know it all. Not only will this hurt team chemistry, but it prevents ministries from being as strong, effective, and efficient as they could be. When someone is not coachable, they come across as arrogant and rude. And, ultimately, it causes people to question if they are truly the right person for the job.
No one ever “arrives,” especially in ministry. Even those of us who have been in ministry for a long time still have so much to learn! And, if we are going to be effective leaders, we need to be learners. Being coachable allows people to discuss ideas, and to talk about ways to improve. This is so important for any team, but especially for people who serve in ministry.
So, when you are hiring someone for your team, be sure to add coachable to the list of things that you are looking for in a candidate. And, let’s make sure that we are leading by example in this area as well.
Thanks Jack! I appreciate your contribution to this important conversation!
